One of the biggest gripes on Windows Mobile was the lack of timely updates, and the first update for the Windows phone is not encouraging. This week I'll cover the latest news on this, to examine briefly the next HD7S AT&T and note some reviews longer Sprint's arrival.

Update begins to roll out

Last week Microsoft began to provide the long-awaited update to Windows phone 7. This first update includes copy paste & and an increase in speed. According to the Microsoft, the update was first made available for those using phones unlocked — i.e., phones that is not tied to a particular carrier.

Microsoft, randomly select individuals and notification via their phone an update is available. How is this first batch of phones, Microsoft is monitoring as progresses, and if all goes well, the update will be rolled out more widely. Microsoft Update deliberately, in order to verify that the update is as problem-free as possible.

PocketNow has a post that explains the process of implementation. First Microsoft develops updates, then it tailors specific vectors, then the test vectors to make sure it works, then Microsoft corrects any problems, then gradually makes the upgrade available.

This probably explains why phones unlocked got before: there is no need for testing by the carriers.

Planning to upgrade to Micosoft

If you're curious, where things are, with a particular device, Microsoft has released a schedule showing what stage is a particular update. There is a program for U.S. phones and one for phones international.

There was a curious situation where carriers appeared to be blaming Microsoft for delays, and Microsoft was blaming the carriers. Now with this published calendar, it is clear whose court the ball is in.

The schedule is updated once a week. So how long will it take? Some reports said it could be the end of April, before some European carriers to obtain the update.

All this is kind of depressing — reminiscent of the sort of problems with Windows Mobile that everyone hoped would be a thing of the past with the arrival of Windows 7 phone. But perhaps because this is the first update and a new platform, the situation is an exception rather than the rule. We can only hope.

AT&T DH7S Coming Soon

The big news out of CTIA last week was the announcement that AT&T will offer the HTC HD7 as HD7S in the coming weeks. No clumsy slideout QWERTY to this phone. Is the touch all the way, with a large 4.3 inch screen. This form factor seems to be the most popular and was already available through T-Mobile as the HD7.

It features a 5 megapixel camera, 16 GB of memory, processor 1 GHz, Dolby Mobile audio and SRS WOW. It will be available with the latest update (copy paste &) installed.
