My latest review Windows Phone was the HTC HD7. It was an awesome laptop ... Huge Display, snappy processor, and a very reliable. I'm not having quite as well for a time with the htc Surround. The phone is the quarry, with a 1 GHz Snapdragon CPU, more memory than an iPad (and how much storage), but definitely seeing some wrinkles in the overall experience of WP this time around. The Surround-although it has some great features-is certainly not enough to reveal the powerhouse that is the HD7.I admit to being spoiled and somewhat distorted by iOS and RIM. Accustomed to the notion of the device is ready for use, not just on, or has activated. When a phone is slow (even slightly), it is painfully obvious. The Surround started a bit lazy (and also slows down or unresponsive at times), and while it certainly could be just the review unit (or network of AT&T), my first feelings are kind of non-plussed. This is really only an initial post on Surround (specifications and impressions), so I'm holding my breath for an upgrade (the node is not available for the Surround until May). I could see a niche for this phone, like Surround sports some nifty features media (slide out speaker and a tripod), and again, as the overall functionality, but ...The front of the unit is a typical modern design candybar SP and Surround is nice in my opinion. It feels sturdy, with an attractive two-tone finish and a clean design typical for HTC. The layout button at the bottom touch screen capacitive 3,8 "has a little extra space for the thumb, but I found typing in portrait or landscape type of annoying, with lots of miscues. The screen, which actually slips out (you can see a small Wedge extra on a Board), is bright and crisp and easily readable in almost all conditions. The point of the slide is to reveal the built-in speakers, which includes a hardware control to enable or disable advanced sound effects (very good portable audio experience). Scroll across the screen reveals a kickstand on the back of the unit that can be extended to prop the Surround in media-orientation observation. Bottom Surround provides a micro-USB connector for charging and syncing to the Zune desktop application, and I think that is a problem for not having permission based filesystem Browse capacity (without adding additional software), but that is not the fault of Surround sound. The phone offers no expansion slots, but then I think the days of the transfer of photos to a memory card (the computer) have gone way of the dodo. There are many ways to get your pix posted directly online, especially when you consider the Surround includes WiFi 802 .11b/g/n. Although the Surround is not a HD7, includes many of the same bells-n-whistles. Internal GPS Antenna, Bluetooth, G-Sensor, digital compass, proximity and ambient light. I still find it annoying that the screen in many applications (like maps) do not rotate accordingly. With the stand off, would have been nice if the Navigator app AT&T (pre-loaded) would be displayed with the correct orientation.The back is a semi-rubbery black finish and I would show a shot under the battery, but the coverage was so difficult to remove, I finally gave up. Maybe it will pry out for post wrap-up. I imagine that in any case, there is a SIM card slot and a 1230 mAh battery as well (I wondered why this unit came with a battery is already there ... now I know). The battery in this unit requires a charge after regular use every few days. Course that could vary considerably (see complete specifications below).Surround the sport that seems to be a very similar (if not themselves) camera like the HD7 (a 5Mpxl with flash). My first impressions are that this camera produces images of the same caliber as HD7-a bit washed out. The top and sides of Surround are adorned with the power required (in the upper right corner from front view), volume (top right) and camera buttons (bottom right). A long narrow on the camera button will take you directly into the app where talking and sharing pix is a breeze. It did take a few minutes for my pix to make it to the web page and the hub update, etc. I posted on the full specs on the Surround below. I was a little hard on it, in the light of my previous experiences with the HD7, but I want to clarify that I am still impressed with these new Windows phones, including Surround sound. The GUI is intuitive and easy to navigate, and the hardware is clearly competitive to other modern smartphones in terms of functionality. I hope that the response sometimes break is just an isolated glitch. Perhaps the update will be released before my follow-up post and will deal with these problems.
